Rock-Punk-Metal Belgium
Whether they were just too drunk to be able to think clear, or they just really wanted to get over it and get on stage, Cone and Stevo from Sum 41 seemed as if they’d want to run off every second when we interviewed them before their gig at Groezrock 2010.
You’ve been touring Europe for a while now. Tomorrow you’ll go to Germany, the last day on the tour. How has it been so far ?
Stevo: ‘So far every show has been sold out. It has been great! It’s our first tour in 9 months, so. It’s like we’ve just given birth to a big rock ‘n roll baby! And it’s beautiful.’
Are you exited to start the Warped tour in May?
Stevo: ‘Yeah, well… it starts in June, but before that we’ll be back touring in Europe. So we’ll do more shows in June and then we’ll fly back in June for the warped tour, and that for 2 months.’
You just said the tour will last more than 2 months, isn’t that tiring?
Stevo: ‘Yeah, it can be, because we’ve got only 5 days of… but.. we’re just playing for 30 minutes, so…it’s kind of easy’
Before you started the tour you’re on now, you’ve finished some last minute songs for your new album. Weren’t you happy with the ones already recorded?
Stevo: ‘Well, that’s another way of looking, because you see: we were like “wow, this is so awesome! Let’s make it more awesome by adding one more awesome song!”
‘NOT, these songs are not awesome enough, they need something to make them awesome. That was a cone song too!’
How did the recording process go? Was it different from your earlier releases?
Stevo: ‘Recording… We had a producer, you know. We started with the drums, and you know.. It didn’t work out, so we moved on. Now we’ve finished the record without him and it’s all good, everything is great! And (pauzes) It’s been a good process. I think this is our best record, so I’m really excited.’
Your latest record was released in 2007, what did it feel good to be recording again?
Stevo: ‘Yeah, it was fun.. I mean, we’re all pretty excited about it.’
Cone: ‘And you never know when you’re going to do another album. We ended our album in 2007 and we were like; “hey, take a break!” After a few months Deryck had some songs so we just decided to start working again.
Stevo: ‘Yeah, we did first think it was going to be an EP of 5 songs, but then he had 6 songs and then we realized that they where too good to waste them on an EP, so we just kept going and made our record.’
What can the fans expect from this album?
Stevo ‘It’s heavier, darker,…’
Cone: ‘Intense!’
Stevo: ‘Intense…aggressive…but still very melodic and fun, so. It still sounds like Sum 41. It’s pretty cool.’
You’ve been together as a band for over 14 years. How is that going?
Stevo: ‘I try not to think about it.’ (laughs)
What is the most awesome thing you ever did as a band?
Stevo: (arrogant smile) ‘Selling a few million records is pretty cool.’
Cone: ‘We’ve got to do a bunch of really cool stuff; tour around the world, sing with other big artists,..
Stevo: ‘I can’t come up with something, but the lifestyle is pretty exciting! You just sort of travel around and you know, it’s just a unique life! Not everyone gets to be a part of.’
You haven’t been in Belgium for that many times, what do you think of our country?
Stevo: ‘The last time we were here, was for …(thinks) Pukkelpop! (tries to pronounce it again) Pjuuuuukelpaop. It was like we were here in a field like this, and the crowd was great, the people where great. But we haven’t seen much off the city. We were in Brussels once, and it was kind of interesting.
Cone: ‘Oh yeah! Where can I get some chocolates? Beause I want to take home some chocolates!’
I don’t know, that’s a hard question. You can try Brussels or the airport?
Cone: ‘We can’t find any chocolate here! And I’m going to get some big shit if I don’t bring some home.’
Stevo: ‘Yeah, but I hope it won’t be melted if you do.’
Stevo: ‘Back to the question! We like Stella!’
Haha, that’s cool!
Stevo: ‘well, that’s what we always drink!’
Cone: ‘Really!’
Stevo: ‘Yeah, I mean. I figure; if you guys make it since like 1300 or 1300-and-something, it will be pretty fucking good!’
A reason to come back?
Stevo: ‘New record is coming out in the summer. August I think, early August. So we’ll be back next year! (yells) And then we will go to fucking Brussels![/i]
Cone: (very enthusiastic) And get some chocolate there!’
