Music in General
Hi Ev, so it's a whole year since your album was released, any comments or thoughts that spring to mind? - "wow, its kinda crazy. A lot has changed in my life and I'm really proud of those changes. Musically I couldn't be any more evolved from where I began this crazy ass journey so I'm just excited about that."
Is Annie's Song a new song you've written or an older song you decided to perform for the autism charity event in Baltimore? - "I actually wrote it years ago(in 06) but I haven't made a good recording of it yet. I have always wanted to release it on itunes with 100% going towards charity"
I was wondering what will happen to the album after the year from W/Bros is up. Will they give you the album, share a percentage of future sales or even allow you to take it to another lab? -"I'm not really sure how it works but basically anything I've released doesn't really change, they continue to sell it and distribute it and our deal remains in place for that album. Any new music I do is my own 100%"
As the "engineer" for those two songs (4Real & Goodbye), What were your responsibilities in the studio? Did you just take care of all of the actual recording? - "The job of a engineer is super wide in scope but could broadly be defined as the person whose job it is to get the sounds, make sure the instruments are recorded properly, make sure the fidelity is top notch and that it is all recorded in a way that will make for a superior end result. Alot of producers in modern music are engineers because pro tools is the main way we record but back in the day a typical producer wasn't as talented at operating the thousands of knobs and pieces of gear as a engineer was and instead would focus on big picture things like direction of the song, performances & song selection instead of the actual sonic process. It's kinda like a Pilot and a navigator."
does EMI is your new recording company? or is it something else? - "EMI is my publisher for all songs that I write which are performed by artist other than myself. I know that sounds complicated but basically it goes like this. If I write a song and someone else sings it, EMI is in charge. if I write a song and I sing it(or a band I'm in sings it) then Big Evil is in charge. When I released albums as an artist all the royalties and marketing used to be done by Warner Bros and are now done by Big Evil/Crush & though we've had a lot of friendly discussions with new partners we haven't decided whether or not to do another label deal. "
New Album Info
Since you're working on the writing part of ET2 right now and it's been awhile since you wrote W2TBLC, I was just wondering how do the writing processes between the two compare? Is there are significant difference or are you just writing what ever you think of and what ever sounds good? - "the writing process so far is completely different. its actually much more similar to my first album's writing process just that I've evolved so much as a writer. I basically lock myself in my studio all day and write whatever comes to mind and try to make it the best it is. I'm still struggling with locking down the exact direction because artistically I'm at a crossroads but it'll all figure itself out!"
Will you ever record rock songs like you did back then or are you now a pop artist through and through? - "recording one right now"
Can you still sing in a grungy voice? absolutely. - "I think on the next record it'll be the perfect blend of my grunge and pop voice"
Is your newer record comparable with Just Sign Here? As in the emotion/vibe but taken lots of steps forward? - "the new stuff is so all over the place. at this exact moment its kinda like slowrocker meets boy meets girl meets best years "
what is song 1 about? "well, the chorus is, why...do I play this game, cause I swear its rigged. I'm wasting time....I been around the world, but it don't mean shit, so. where where do i go, where where do i belong? cause I sure as hell don't know. where where do I go where where do I belong?"
Gear/Tech Questions
I was wondering what gauge string you prefer for standard tuning/drop tuning/and baratone? - "standard 11 gauge strings for my electrics in both E and eB. the baritone requires special strings and I do'nt know the gauge. on acoustics I like 13s which are typically the medium setup."
Are you still planning on releasing a Evan PRS Signature line? - "I'd love to. not sure when it would happen but I'd love to. "
What pickups did your Cherry Sunburst PRS(Avril era) have? - "I thought I read it once but I can't find it anymore. And do you know where I can buy them? it was PRS #7 pickups(thats what came in all the original singlecuts) check the web."
Evan, What is the model of Taylor you used for record or in the studio.? - "I use 610ce live, love em, bright yet balanced and easy to play. In the studio I almost always use my 814ces because they're just SO damn perfect."
When you're recording electric guitar in your studio what do you use? Real Amps or modelers? - "I use almost only Eleven ! thats my little secret sauce. On W2BLC we used a lot of mine and devin's divided by 13 amps with a little bogners but 90% of tone is in the playing. My only real advise is use your ears and not your eyes. Ignore what the knobs say and just adjust accordingly to what you hear. some of my favorite tones have the knobs turned in the craziest ways that you'd think would sound horrible. Also the guitar and playing of the guitar greatly changes the tone."
Hey Evan. What is the microphone you usually use for recording guitar? What is the model of it?- "Neumann KM184 --> Neve 1073 --> distressor"
What kind of capo do you use? - "I just use the Kyser standard capo, love it. simple."
