About to Pop: Evan Taubenfeld
Six Questions With Evan Taubenfeld:
What was the first time you heard your song on the radio like?
I'd love to say I acted all cool and relaxed, but the truth is I flipped out. I was sitting in the car with the radio promotions rep from Reprise, and I just started yelling. It's funny -- I had been waiting for the moment my entire life, but it was better than anything I've ever experienced.
You seem to stay very connected with your fans. What's the craziest thing a fan has ever done?
I actually don't like the concept of fans; to me they're all friends and family. Some of the most supportive and devoted family members we've got have definitely taken things pretty far. Nothing insane, but I played a small show at a club in Baltimore without promoting it, and a bunch of people came from Japan, Korea, France and Hong Kong. That was kinda intense. I wanted to pay them back for their flights.
What is one of your favorite memories from all the time you spent working with Avril Lavigne?
It's so hard to choose "favorite" memories from that time period in my life. The whole thing was such an amazing experience and almost every day was a surreal dream come true. That being said, 'Metallica Icon' -- where we covered 'Fuel' in front of Metallica-- was pretty awesome. Also, playing 'Iris' on stage with Johnny Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls) was awesome. I had sat in my parents' basement playing that song along with the records, and to be on stage with him playing only a few years later was insane.
You said you became obsessed with a well-written pop song at a young age. What would you say are some of the best pop songs of all time?
'Let It Be' (the Beatles), 'Don't Stand So Close to Me' (the Police), 'The Sign' (Ace of Base), 'Cry Me a River' (Justin Timberlake), 'Motownphilly' (Boyz II Men), 'Since You've Been Gone' (Kelly Clarkson), 'Toxic' (Britney Spears), 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' (Nirvana).
Is your songwriting inspired by real-life events, and do you ever find it hard to play certain songs that are particularly close to you?
Anything I'm writing and performing as an artist is definitely going to be inspired by my life or things around me. It's never hard for me to perform songs that are really personal, but talking about them can be tough.
Are you nervous about what kind of reception your solo album will receive?
I'm scared out of my mind, but I feel really good about it. So, I'm nervously excited.
