Interesting Questions answered on Sum41.com
hey guys i was wondering that during the underclass hero tour why didnt you play alot of songs from the chuck album like no reason and welcome to hell and are you guys gonna make anymore videos from the underclass hero album??
We have 4 full length albums and 1 EP now so its hard to play everything people want to hear. We are not doing anymore videos from UH. We are concentrating on new music now.

Road to Ruin is the show we are doing now so whatever you see in that is the stuff we do now.

HEY SUM 41 i LIKE YOU GUYS!
MY QUESTION IS: WHAT IS THE DVD OF SUM 41 IN CONGO?
That is a Documentary that we did in 2004 in the Congo. Its basically about how a country deals with the post civil war that it had for many years. You should check it out. It worth the watch.

Hey just a general question for you guys. Well for the last album and half the one you're currently making, why does Stevo finish first? Then usually Cone then Bizzy D...
Just a wondering about that...
Drums have to be recorded first because everything is layered on top of them. Also, I like to be out of the studio before Deryck and Cone have their "creative differences".

just a question or two for stevo, during live how many mics do you use on your kit, a mate of mine played this show and used 2 for snare, 3 for kick, 3 overheads i think, and 2 for every tom (i think three toms all up)? And i want to get new kit but am stuck between DW or Gretsch im wanna stay with maple shells too, just wondering if you played a gretsch and could give some advise.
We mic everything - snare (top and bottom), all the toms, the kick, hats, cymbals (with overhead mics)... It's pretty standard stuff. In the studio it gets a bit jiggy...
I use DWs which I think are the best live drums. We've recorded with Gretsch - but they were always vintage kits. Don't know what their new ones are like, but I'm sure they're good. I've always used maple drums.

hey just wondering, i know that in your last album you combined all of the things you think you did best on. is your new album gonna be like that or is it gonna sound like one of the past individual albums? also, is deryck going to produce this album too?
thanks guys. YOU ROCK
Of the 7 or 8 songs I've heard they're darker and heavier than the last album. Maybe something in between DTLI and Chuck? I don't know how to describe it... But I like it.

My question is for Deryck,
What previous album would you say the new one you're working on sounds like most? And also, any song/album title ideas yet?
it's still too soon to tell. like all of our albums, it will sound like sum41 but will have a new sound to it as well. some of the songs i've been writing lately have been on the darker side. but very energetic.

hey sum 41 or who ever reads this, do you prefer playing your older songs like from half hour of power and stuff or from underclass hero? cuz your new albums good but it kinda sounds like you guys are going soft..........
i actually enjoy playing a bit of everything.

Hey Sum 41 you guys all rock!! I was wondering, On your next CD are you gonna put in a random funny song like A.N.I.C. or Ma Poubelle?
not sure yet that stuff just kind of comes naturally. we're still the same guys as we've always been so i'm sure there will be some humor on the album.
answered by deryck on Jan 10, 2009 11:07pm
deryck,
how do you approach coming up with melodies? do you have something already in your head and find it on the guitar? or do you just use the guitar to find something that sounds good?
or both?
i usually just start playing something on guitar and then just sing stuff over it. when i like something i'll record it and take it from there.

my question is for Deryck, what kind of speakers do you use in your guitar cabs?

What is your favorite Sum 41 song to play or listen to?
I still really like to play Still Waiting, Pain For Pleasure (the ego booster), Welcome to Hell. In Too Deep, which we used to hate to play, is actually really fun now.

hey sum 41,
i loved the rocked in congo documentery.
i was wondering did anything else happen in the congo that wasn't mentioned in the video? just curious.
thanks
I haven't seen the doc in a while so I can't remember what's in there exactly, but I do remember a few things that kind of set the tone for the whole trip. When we first got to the congo, we were stopped by a jeep full of Congolese soldiers (who were very drunk) and they demanded to see our passports - I remember thinking it was strange/funny that one of them had passed out on his rocket launcher because he was so drunk.
Another thing, was that after they let us leave the airport we were stopped about 10 times by different kids with machetes who'd set up roadblocks. Some of the kids were like 6 years old so we'd just drive past them. But the older teenagers... that was a bit intimidating.
After the fighting took place and we were evacuated from the hotel to the UN compound we saw a UN attack helicopter shoot a rocket into the jungle. It was the biggest explosion I'd ever seen. I don't know how many people it must have killed, but after they did that, things got quiet again for a while.

Hey Deryck, does this new album have any kind of theme? Like will it be based a lot on your own life experiences like Underclass Hero was? 'cause that made that album really good. Oh and I think you guys should come to New Zealand =)- Wade.
cool. thank you very much. like every album i have a really hard time repeating myself. there are different themes on this record. and i'm going in directions and areas i've never gone before. thanks for being a fan.

I have a few questions for Cone. What is your favorite bass to play, and also how do you produce the extremely low tone that you do live?
Thanks,
Mark
I have a Sunburst Fender Precision 62' re-issue that I've used on every record thats awesome. Thats probably up there and also my white and black Precision 59' re-issue that I still take on tour is probably up there with the favorite basses I like to play. Live I use Ampeg amps and the low end your talking about probably comes from the Avalon DI I use. Plus our sound guys are great too. So a combination of all that.

Hey stevo! What was the clip you had the must fun to record?
I'm guessing that by 'clip' you mean music video... So, I would say In Too Deep because it's funny and it was like we were on the set of a big movie. Either that one, Still Waiting or All to Blame. They were the most fun.

In the past sum 41 records you have a sang a few songs while deryck plays drums will there be anything like that on this record?
Everytime that's happened it's always been a last minute, funny thing that just happened. We wrote pain for pleasure as a joke and then put it on the album as an afterthought.
It may happen, we just don't normally plan for it to happen.

Hey, Where did the name 88 come from?
88 is the beats per minute of the song. When we were doing demos for Chuck we called it 88 cause thats how fast it was then we just never changed it.
