Autism Ontario
Matt Brann, music producer
former drummer for Avril Lavigne
About Matt
In July, 2005, Autism Ontario - Durham Region announced Matt Brann, drummer for one of Canada's hottest musicians, Avril Lavigne, as its Celebrity Patron. Matt, who hails from Ajax, became interested in autism while getting to know a neighbourhood family and their son, who has autism. The boy's mom is a volunteer and member of Autism Ontario - Durham Region. After learning about the organization, Matt donated autographed drumsticks and a CD to be auctioned off on eBay as a fundraising effort for the chapter.
To launch his involvement as Celebrity Patron, Matt proudly displayed the Autism Ontario - Durham Region logo on his bass drum for the crowd to see during Avril Lavigne's concert in Toronto on July 15, 2005. Having a celebrity in a high-profile band helping to raise awareness about autism in our community is a truly thrilling development in the life and growth of Autism Ontario - Durham Region.
We soon discovered Matt has fans from all over the world, many of whom have contacted Autism Ontario - Durham Region after visiting our website to learn more about autism, simply because of Matt's support for the cause. We are grateful to Matt for his willingness to use his celebrity in a positive way by raising awareness about autism.
In November 2005 and 2006, Matt attended our annual Family Christmas Party at Heydenshore Pavilion in Whitby. Not only did he spend time interacting one-on-one with the kids and teens in atttendance - not to mention a few star-struck parents and volunteers! - he shared ice cream cake with party guests and played drums with a local band to entertain the crowd. Matt's presence at our family parties draws significant media attention. The story, along with information about autism and Autism Ontario, has been carried on radio, television and in newspapers across the GTA. You rock, Matt.
In 2007, Matt's career expanded to include producing upcoming bands and performers. While he is no longer drumming for Avril, he remains committed to raising awareness about autism, and willing to support Autism Ontario - Durham Region in any way he can.
