Summer is set for Sum 41
Canadian punk rock band SUM 41 is back! After a two year hiatus the boys are set to take on the Soundwave Festival kicking off this February. Drummer/vocalist, Steve Jocz takes time out of their busy schedule to have a one on one with Monique Budd.
The synergy of the band can't be missed but don't let that fool you as this band is not just a sum of the collective but indeed a sum of their own individual talents. Their blend is the personification of music fused with personality, attainable and relatable to their fan base constantly growing in numbers.
SUM 41 is straight up punk rock. Jocz kicks off by chatting about how the name came to be. He believes the name came from a friend of theirs called Mark, and to cut a long story short, the name SUM 41 came from the band starting 41 days into summer.
Moving on to how they feel in relation to being compared to mainstream bands such as BLINK 182 and GREEENDAY, the band are no way phased by the use of labels and pigeon holes, they do what they do and that’s paramount to their success.
Looking back over SUM 41’s repertoire is astounding. The jovial lads from Canada serve a great need in the music industry for the Millennial Generation and are well received by Xer’s musicians. These baby faced assassins, pack an arsenal of successful charted albums including Killer No Filler and Under Class Hero to name a few along with non-stop touring the globe and not to forget the performances with rock legends.
In 2003 SUM 41 was invited to perform at MTV Icon – METALLICA Tribute, opening with For Whom the Bell Toll hammering into Enter Sandman as METALLICA hit the stage to a crazed crowd, capitalizing on the lead break ending the medley with Master of Puppets. Jocz speaks of how the band just fell into that and of how he had never watched MTV before until they were on it. He went on to explain how his experience performing with Tommy Lee and JUDAS PRIEST vocalist Rob Halford was another thing that fell in their lap. SUM 41 rocked out another cool medley for MTV’s 20th year anniversary. They kicked off with their own song Fat Lip, Tommy Leejoined them during No Sleep Til (BEASTIE BOYS) and Halford joined them ending the medley with You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’.
Although these offerings come organically to the band, Jocz speaks of how he was lucky enough to be able to meet the likes of Lars Ulrich (METALLICA), being able to ask him how certain things are done on the drums. Not taking for granted all the things that come their way and taking out some of the best experiences. Jocz tells the story of working with ‘old school punk legend’ IGGY POP and how recording Skull Ring was another cool achievement for the band.
During the band’s hiatus, they all managed to keep busy working on their side projects. Jocz was happy to add getting married to his Australian bride, among other things, was a highlight. Back and ready to hit the stages, SUM 41 played the VANS WAPRED TOUR for the fourth time. Their tour card was full as they set their sights on the up and coming Soundwave Festival. We casually talked about if there were any bands he is interested in watching on the coveted Soundwave billing. Jozc added that being a fan of IRON MAIDEN, catching them play was a given. He also says he is keen to watch their mates PENNYWISE while on tour together again.
Asking if it is SUM 41’s first time to Australia, Jocz quickly confirmed that it wasn’t for him as he was recently in Australia with his wife from Byron Bay, before returning to the US.
Screaming Bloody Murder is SUM 41’s 2011 new release and it’s what we want to hear about. Jocz credits Whibley for producing the album. The album has a release date set for 29 March 2011. So will this be the same release date for Australia? Jocz laughs as he was given the paperwork on the release date for Australia thinking at the time he wouldn’t need the information, but confirms that the release date for Oz will be 1 April 2011.
Following their Australian leg of their tour, the band will continue to rock the world. The title track Screaming Bloody Murder has gone viral. Check it out if you wanna taste of what’s to come this coming March.
