Deryck Whibley says people would be shocked to discover the contents of his record collection.
The 31-year-old Canadian musician is best known as the guitarist and lead vocalist of rock band Sum 41.
Although he has a passion for the punk and metal genres, Deryck believes it is important to embrace all varieties of music, and has a particular penchant for the late crooner Frank Sinatra, who is known for his hit albums such as Songs for Swingin' Lovers!, Come Fly with Me and Only the Lonely.
“I really love Frank Sinatra – he’s one of my favourite artists – but no one ever believes that I would listen to him!” smiled Deryck.
“I have a lot of records that people wouldn’t really expect me to listen to.”
The star has been hugely influenced by his idol, and says the singer has encouraged him to make the most of life. Deryck admired Frank’s lust for life and plans to maintain an equally positive attitude.
“‘The best is yet to come’. That’s a Frank Sinatra quote – he enjoyed it all, too,” replied Deryck, when Rock Sound magazine asked what he would like his final words to be.
Deryck Whibley isn’t sure whether he will go down in history as a musician.
The 31-year-old Canadian musician is best known as the guitarist and lead vocalist of rock band Sum 41, and he was also famously married to songstress Avril Lavigne from 2006 to 2010.
Deryck is proud of his band’s musical heritage, although fears he probably won’t be remembered for his rock and roll talent. The modest star doesn’t consider himself to be hugely gifted, although he is glad to say that he has always enjoyed life.
“I don’t know if I’m that good a musician to be remembered as a musician, but I made it, and [people should know] I just enjoyed it all,” he told Rock Sound magazine.
The musician says his life is relatively carefree, and he tries to begin every day in a positive mood. Despite achieving fame and success as a rock star, Deryck can’t think of one defining moment where he felt he had made it, and prefers to look at his life on a larger scale.
“I’m sort of proud all the time; there’s not one moment to define how proud I am. I wake up every day and I’m pretty happy,” he smiled.
