5 Quick Questions with…Evan Taubenfeld
He’s slowly stepping out from “Under the Radar,” touring with the likes of Metro Station, The Academy Is, and Secondhand Serenade. Frequency Magazine recently had the quick chance to chat with Evan Taubenfeld about his album, Avril, and…Steve Jobs?
FM: Your debut album as a solo artist, Welcome to the Blacklist Club, is only a month away. It’s undoubtedly an exciting time in your life—but it has been a long time coming. Now it’s your turn in the spotlight. What message do you most want to convey with its release?
Evan: I’m not looking to convey a message. If everyone can find a song they like and connect to…I’ll be happy.
FM: The album’s first single, “Boy Meets Girl,” just reached the one million views mark—due in large part to your fans. Congratulations! With the recent release of the fan-centric “It’s Like That” video, we have to ask: What are your future plans for your fans—or friends, as you often call them?
Evan: My friends, who I call the Blacklist Club (and anyone can be a part) and I are just going to work really hard to enjoy the next year or two. It’s been a long time coming and when we see a real live success like a million plays on MySpace it only solidifies the fact that our family is exploding.
FM: Speaking of fan appreciation, you also seem to appreciate life. We admit it, after hearing about your “I Get to:” tattoo—and possible spin-off project—we’re intrigued. For those not in-the-know, what is it and how did it come about?
Evan: I went through a rough period a little while back and a friend suggested I try the gratitude thing. The modified version I settled on was saying “I Get To:” every morning in place of “I Have To:” It allows me to constantly remember how lucky I am and that when I get a little ego or that touch of preciousness. I’m not huge into all new age movements and systems but I really found that after a few days my perspective felt better. The site we’re building is simply a place for people to get their “I Get To:”’s off their chest and integrate directly with their Twitter feed.
FM: Maybe we all need to adopt this philosophy! Let’s recap: You’ve gotten to do a lot of things—most notably, touring the world and playing on the stage with Avril Lavigne. You’re on your own now, but you two seem to maintain a friendly and professional relationship. How does it feel this time around, writing for yourself and for Lavigne?
Evan: Well, we’ve always been incredibly close friends. I count on her for a lot and I feel like she can count on me for just as much. Our creative relationship has grown basically the same way our friendship has, we’ve just gotten more and more comfortable over the years and we really know one another well now so the process is easy.
FM: A final question: You continue to collaborate with Avril. We know that’s a success. But the real question is: If you could collaborate with anyone else, who would it be?
Evan: Steve Jobs.
